For those who wear uniforms, or have spouses or kids who do – keep a sewing kit handy for the inevitable missing button. I take buttons off of old uniforms and keep them in a small Tupperware type container. I also include a spool of matching thread and a package of sewing needles in the container. Sewing a lost button on takes no time at all because everything I need is right there!

I’d like to be able to say that I was inspired by LMA’s post about teaching her oldest to do laundry. I’d like to be able to say that I wanted to teach my daughter to do laundry so that I could say that I was raising an responsible adult. I’d even settle for being able to day that I wanted to teach my daughter to do her own laundry in order to lessen my workload.

The truth of the matter is that I decide to teach my daughter to do her own laundry in the hopes of preventing my head from spinning around on the top of my neck. Also, fire shooting from my mouth? Not a good look.

I walked into her bathroom one day to see this.

Her laundry hamper wide open with everything spilling out of it. I could have probably dealt with that except for among the piles I saw many things. I saw a pair of socks that were still rolled up in to the little ball that I put them in. I saw a t-shirt that was still folded exactly as it had been in her basket. I also saw a pair of shorts that I knew had not seen the light of day since the time I washed them a few days ago.

What happened? My head spun around on my neck and fire shot from my mouth, that’s what happened. I know every mother has experienced this. You spend hours doing your family’s laundry. You think your kids are old enough to put the said laundry away by themselves. You realize it might not be placed perfectly folded into the drawers in their rooms once it leaves your control. But hey, that’s just it. You are giving them some of the control and responsibility.

The only problem is that you have a sneaking suspicion that they are not putting everything away. Some of those clean clothes that you lovingly laundered and folded and placed in their baskets, some of those clean clothes are making their way back in to the dirty clothes without a wearing in between. One or two items each week you overlook. You pull them out of the dirty stack and place them back in their basket to be put away.

However, when I happened upon this pile of dirty in her bathroom with obvious clean seasoned it. I flipped. It was not pretty. Hence, the laundry lesson. Here she is putting a load into the washer.

Let me clarify that this was last night after her dance recital. Hence the excessive makeup. I do not let my ten year old walk around with any make up on. Much less the amount required for a recital. You should have seen the looks I got from the other mothers in the restaurant we went to for dinner after the show. The only thing that saved me was the fact that there were a few other families there from the dance studio. So we all had children that looked like miniature ladies of the night with us. At least I was not alone in my judged by stranger moms misery.

Here is the other picture I took of my daugher learning to do her laundry. Obviously her little brother wanted ot be in the photo with her. And, as always, she was the picture of patience and grace.

So, have any of you started teaching your children to do their own laundry since LMA’s post on the subject? This is the perfect time to mention that the entire family’s laundry was my job all through middle school and high school. Each weekend I would spend hours doing everyone’s laundry. I would also do everyone’s ironing. I ironed all the clothes as they were washed, not as they were ready to wear. So everything my entire family owned was ironed and ready to go each week. My dad didn’t even send his business shirts to the cleaners. I did them all. I did get paid though for my efforts. $5 a week. I think child labor laws might kick in these days!

But you know what? I went of to college knowing how to do my own laundry. In fact, I think that is the only reason my brother allowed me come and visit him at college as much as I did my senior year in high school. I would do his laundry and he would introduce me to cute college boys. I think I got the better end of that deal! At least when I was 17 I did!

We got a big box from the concierge, put the gift in the much larger box and padded it with all of our dirty clothes.

It was the best trick ever! We came home with much lighter suitcases and when I got home I didn’t feel the pressure of getting everything unpacked, washed and put away. I had two days at home to decompress and catch up with my kids. Then the UPS guy showed up with my box of dirty clothes.

We have done this ever since whenever we go on a long trip. We get a box on the first day and put it in the corner of the room. It serves as our laundry hamper while we are there and then we ship home our clothes on the day we leave. Just make sure the box is sturdy! You don’t want the UPS guy to have to pick up your dirty unmentionables!

I have three daughters. Along with daughters comes drama, tears, hormones and loads and loads of laundry! I have been battling the laundry ever since I can remember. My kids throw everything in the laundry basket, whether it is dirty or not. If they try it on and decide not to wear it, they throw it in the basket. If they wear it for1 hour and it’s not dirty, they throw it in the basket.

It’s gotten so bad that I have instituted a 3 day rule for pajamas. My girls are not allowed to put pajamas in the dirty clothes unless they have worn them 3 nights in a row. You see, they are too lazy to fold anything and put it back in their drawer. If they throw it in this cool plastic basket in their closet, a magic fairy comes, washes it, folds it and places it nicely in their drawer.

My oldest will be 11 years old this summer. The time has come. She needs to do her own laundry! She is not happy about this. It is not making her feel grown up. She is no dummy. This is a chore and she can smell it a mile away!

I don’t have high expecations about this. I know this is something that I will have to “teach” her over and over and over again. She’s not very good at hanging clothes up. They get all cockeyed on the hanger and she’s especially bad at hanging pants. But, I know if I want to get more done so I can have more fun that I must raise responsible children. They must pick up some of the household duties. They get the pleasure of becoming self-sufficient young ladies and I get the pleasure of watching The Young & Restless uninterrupted.

Here are some picture from our first laundry lesson:

Who does the laundry at your house? Do your little darlings participate? Do you think I am a Lazy Mom for assigning my kids chores or do you think I am raising responsible youngsters?

So, Amanda and I have a spreadsheet that details what our Topic of the Week is going to be and who is responsible for posting each day. Tomorrow (today when you read this) is my day. I am sitting at my computer totally blank. Our topic is housekeeping and honestly, I don’t feel qualified to talk about that right now. The housekeeping thorns in my side are laundry and my kitchen counters. I have already posted about both of them. Yet here I sit, staring at piles of laundry and piles of junk on my counters.

LMA stopped by a little bit ago to drop something off and I was embarrassed to open my door. This is my big question. Why was I embarrassed? LMA knows that I struggle with these things. LMA knows that my house is messy sometimes. LMA knows that I would rather be playing on my computer instead of cleaning my house. LMA also knows that I spent my morning taking my kids to the dentist and volunteering at the school. LMA knows that I try to keep a clean house and it doesn’t always look as bad as it does right now. Yet, I was still embarrassed.

Which brings me full circle, right back to where I started. With too much laundry and piles of junk on my counters. But hey, I have a topic for my post now! We all have too much to do. We all would rather be doing something fun. We all judge ourselves too harshly and expect too much from ourselves. If we could look inside all those houses that seem so clean and perfect on the outside, what do you think we would find? I think we would find one of three things:

Someone living in a maze made of piles of newspapers waiting for Oprah and Peter Walsh to knock on their door and rescue them. Those people aren’t happy.

Someone living in what appears to be a perfectly clean and organized home, just like it looks on the outside. We all know what kind of time it takes to achieve and maintain that. My guess is those people aren’t happy either.

Or someone who is somewhere in the middle. Someone like me who realizes that it isn’t worth giving up time with my family and friends enjoying life just so all of my closets can be camera ready.

My house is a little depressing right now, but that’s OK. In fact I have decided to be thankful for my mess. My house is messy right now because I got to spend the morning with my kids at the dentist. I am thankful that my kids like the dentist. I am thankful that we have dental insurance. I am thankful that I am physically able to take them there and provide the care they need. I then got to go volunteer with the art program at the school. I am thankful that our school has such a great volunteer art program. I am thankful that my son gets excited for me to be there. I am thankful that I am able to go visit my child at school in the middle of the day.

I am now pressed for time. I have to get snacks, Grace’s dance clothes and Quenten’s karate uniform ready. When I pick them up from school in 20 minutes I am taking them both directly to a neighboring elementary school for an Academic Basketball competition that Grace is competing in. Straight from there I will take them to dance and karate. When that is over it will be time to feed them dinner, do homework and get them ready for bed.

What this means to me is that when I get home at 6:30 this evening my house will still be a mess and I won’t have time to do much about it until 8:30 tonight. But, I am thankful! Did you see how I did that? I started this post all grumpy and annoyed and just a few short paragraphs later I have turned it all around. I am thankful! I have a laundry room with a working washer and dryer. I have a nice kitchen filled with food, even if I do have cluttered countertops. I have a healthy family. I have a car in good working order to drive the kids around. I am thankful!

So, after all my rambling, this is what I want you to take away from my post. Don’t be so hard on yourself. Don’t expect so much from yourself. Be thankful for your life, your health and your family. Make sure they know how much you love them and how thankful you are to have them in your life.

With that said, I am making a commitment to get the laundry under control and my kitchen counter cleaned off before I go to bed tonight. I am not going to write anymore about it, but I will take a couple of pictures to insert when I am done. So the pictures you see below (which I technically haven’t taken yet) are the result of a changed attitude. Just don’t leave me mean comments if I didn’t get it all done OK? Remember….thankful!

Keeping in line with my thankful theme I have decided to link Thrifty Thursday at Tales from Margaritaville.

This is a picture that I found in Fredericksburg, TX at a great little boutique. I think it is called Hen Feathers. Anyone? It has a chicken on the sign. So if you are ever in Fredericksburg go visit them.

Anyway, this great item was on the clearance shelf in the back of the store. It may be hard to tell in the picture, but it is a fabric piecing. I think it’s great! I picked this up for $11. The only thing wrong with it was the paint on the frame was chipped in a couple of places. I remember thinking that I could easily fix that with a Sharpie. I honestly don’t even remember if I did that or not. This is hanging above my pantry door and fills that spot nicely, just to give you an idea of the scale (because I am not climbing up there to measure it!).

So, my thankful theme can be summed up in these three little words. Life is Good!

OK Lazy Moms, don’t forget to submit your housekeeping tips! Today is the last day for submissions this week. Our poll to vote for the winner goes up tomorrow. The winner gets a free car wash from Mr. Car Wash. You can submit your tips in our sidebar. Thanks!

Did I get your attention? This week’s topic has been housekeeping. We have received some fabulous tips from all of you Lazy Moms! It seems one of our least favorite chores is laundry. Can most of us agree? Even if you spend two solid days sorting, washing, drying, folding and putting it all away, as soon as it is time for everyone to put on their pj’s you’ve got a whole load ready to go again! It just never ends! Kind of like making the beds. Kind of like figuring out what’s for dinner. Kind of like cleaning off the kitchen counter. Hmmm, seems like much of what we do just never ends! I guess that’s a post all in it’s own.

Back to laundry. I do, on average, three loads a day. Here are some of my favorite laundry tips that help me get through it all. Now, this doesn’t mean that I like doing it, but these tips do help this Lazy Mom get it done!

Lazy Mom Amanda mentioned this tip earlier this week. Have a laundry sorter in the area where most of your dirty clothes are. I keep a sorter with three sections in my closet. My kids still prefer to take their baths in my bathroom, so most of my family’s dirty clothes end up in my room. I even used to keep their underwear and pj’s in my room as well so I wouldn’t have to go upstairs to get them at bath time (Lazy Mom). I can tell very easily each morning which loads I need to do that day as they are already sorted for me. There is a very sturdy laundry sorter available in our Lazy Mom store.

Check to see if your washer has a timer feature. It is a great thing! Each night I put a load in the washer and set it to start before I wake up. That way I start my day with a load already washed!

If there is room in your laundry area, install a hanging rod. You can put your clothes on hangers right out of the dryer and then you won’t have to iron as much.

It helps to keep the whole house looking nice and neat if you can contain the laundry mess in one area. Try not to let it spill out into the living room any longer that you have to.

Keep a separate basket or tub for each member of the family (mom and dad can share). Once you have folded each load divide it between the baskets. Each day after school my kids know to empty their baskets. I also put their things that I found throughout the house in their basket to be put away. Even if you do not have room for several full size laundry baskets in your laundry area there is a possible solution for you. This Lazy Mom loves the Trofast System from Ikea. They have several different sizes and colors available. The tubs are smaller than standard size laundry baskets, which is not a bad thing. Smaller tubs are easier for smaller hands to carry.

Lazy Mom Amanda does things a little differently. She keeps a small laundry basket in each child’s closet for their dirty clothes. That way she does each child’s laundry by itself and the loads don’t get mixed. When she goes to put the laundry away it is already sorted by room.

The best folding tip we received this week was from Jennifer F. She says “Have your housekeeper fold the laundry and pull from the clean, folded pile the rest of the week.”

We also have several Lazy Mom tips for ironing which we will share in a later post.

If you have read this far you must be a dedicated Lazy Mom! We will pick our favorite tip of the week to be announced tomorrow. Our first giveaway of Lazy Loot! Our Topic of the Week next week is cooking (What’s for dinner Mom?!).

We have received a few suggestions this week from fellow Lazy Moms about things they would like to see on our site. Please let us know what types of things you want us to talk about. We have plans to add a discussion board in the near future so all you Lazy Moms can talk to each other and have a forum to share tips. There are great things to come!

Recently I was invited to a luncheon for a young Mom who is looking at moving to our town for her husband’s job. The purpose of the luncheon was for her to get to know some other Moms her age and to answer any questions she might have. It was a fabulous idea. I wish someone could have done that for me.

The hostess asked us to go around the room and introduce ourselves. She also requested that we offer a time-saving tip that we have discovered. Boy, did this set off my Lazy Mom alarm! This is what we are talking about. Everyone has an inner Lazy Mom. The tips everyone shared were great and I wanted to share a few with you.

1) When preparing a “real” meal (as opposed to a frozen meal), double the recipe so you will have another meal in your freezer.

2) When thinking about cleaning your house, take care of the “water” chores first. That would mean: laundry, kitchen and straightening bathrooms. If you can stay on top of these, life will be much easier.

3) Don’t allow your kids under the age of 6 to participate in sports or activities. One of the Moms stated that she asked her middle-schooler if he remembers playing t-ball or soccer at age 3 and 4. He had no memory of it. Why waste your time, money and energy at this young age. Your time can be better spent with your family at home, instead of in the car.

4) Have a weekly family meeting to coordinate everyone’s calendars. This particular Mom uses a wipe off board and loads all of the activities for the week for everyone to see. This saves time and confusion.

We have saved you even more time by adding a wipe off calendar to our brand new Lazy Mom’s Store. Now, you can purchase your favorite Lazy Mom items right here on our site. Don’t waste time going all over the web. Do your one stop shopping here! You will find the link to the right of this page. Simply click on it and follow the directions!

5) One Mom suggested frozen foods. She said what is most important to the kids is that you are all around the table. They don’t really care if you are having french cuisine or french fries!

6) Another great tip was to keep 2 baskets in your laundry room: one for whites and one for colors. She taught her kids at a very young age to bring down their dirty clothes and put them in the appropriate basket. She doesn’t waste time gathering and sorting clothes. The kids have already taken care of it! You can purchase this great laundry sorter right here in our Lazy Mom’s Store. Just click the icon on the right!

7) This last great tip is a way to get your kids involved. This family did not believe in paying their kids allowances. They pay their kids a commision based upon the work they do. This helps the Lazy Mom because her kids wantto work to earn their money. They use a bank made by Christian finance guru, Larry Burkett. This bank has a place for you to deposit money to save, a place to deposit for giving, and a place to deposit fun money. We have made this bank available in our Lazy Mom’s store. Check it out!

Keep those Lazy Mom tips coming and don’t forget to embrace your inner Lazy Mom. We know it’s in there!!!
