Summer Camp
Hi ho! Hi ho! It’s off to camp they go.
My oldest has gone to “spend the night camp” for the last two summers. She loves it. I was a nervous wreck the first year she went. She had just finished 2nd grade and the camp is Sunday through Friday. During this time, there is no communication unless your child sends you a letter. It was such a loooonggg week for me. I sent her with self addressed stamped envelopes and every day I went to the mail box and waited and waited. Finally, on Friday, this is the letter I received:
Dear Mom and Dad:
I had so much fun at about 9:00, we had this very very very big party! It was so much fun. Every body went and we had music so loud I couldn’t hear my own voice. It was awesome! P.S. It was like a teenager party. It was GREAT! Love, Hannah
P.S. Did I say that it was GREAT!
P.S.S. I love you and I miss you.
P.P.S. I think they don’t print e-mails at lunch, I think they do it any other time so can you send me letters in the morning?
I guess not getting a letter was a good thing. She was too busy having fun!
This year we are sending little sister too. She has been begging to go. She asks about it all the time and I really thought she was good to go. After our final payment went non-refundable (and Kanakuk is not cheap!) Abby informed me that the only reason she really wanted to go to camp was so she could get care packages. Um, I could have saved a lot of money by just delivering those care packages to her bedroom!!! I do think she will have a great time. She doesn’t seem one bit concerned to be away from me and that thrills me.
Camp is great for the Lazy Mom. They get to swim, horseback ride, ski, play, sing, etc. and I get a much needed break! I am looking forward to the day that all 3 little buggers get to go to camp. I have friends that use that week to take their vacations. I’m not even opposed to a stay-cation. Just me in my house with my DVR and a book!
What about at your house? Do your kids go to camp? Do you think I am crazy for letting mine go? Did you go to camp as a child?
Don’t forget to submit your tips for ways to entertain your children this summer. We have only received a couple of tips and we would love to give you a Lazy Mom’s Tote Bag to carry around this summer!

My kids do not go to summer camp although I wish they would sometimes!
They are so independent but yet don’t want to be that brave as to stay away from mom and dad for a week!!!
I went to summer camps as a child like girl scout camp and church camp and loved them. Great memories I have!
I still have hope yet that one day one of my children will venture from the nest and spread their wings if only for a little bit in the summer!
When I was a kid, my mom sent my sister and I to summer camp it was the last time we ever went. I was having fun until I fell off a bridge into the creek. Thats right…the bridge BROKE! It was in the middle of the week of camp, we were heading over to the other side of the place and we needed to cross this rope kind of bridge. One of the “boy groups” up ahead was on the bridge when they were jumping and shaking it. My cabin of girls were on the middle and working our way to get off when the trees that were holding it gave way and we all fell in the water. I was about to get off when the counselor pulled me back. When I went back the next day I could see why she did it. There was nothing but rocks that lined that way and I would’ve hit them on the way down. Only one girl had an injury enough to call home but the rest of us were not allowed to call home. I made them go get my sister. When we got back home, “I fell off a bridge” was the first thing I said to my mother and the tears all came back.
So after my adventure…my children have NEVER done an away camp.
I’m glad your daughter is having so much fun. My husband had fun when he was a kid and did summer camps. Thankfully he never argued the reason why we should send our kids. He understood.
