Confessions of a Lazy Mom on Parenting

This past weekend I traveled with my daughter to Lubbock, TX for a regional gymnastics meet.  I’m sure I’m going to get some questions on this so I will just tell you that Hannah is not in traditional gymnastics.  She is in TNT (power tumbling, trampoline and double mini).  Most of you probably haven’t even heard of this, but believe it or not it’s a growing sport and trampoline has been in the past couple of Olympics.  It’s tough.  Get out there on your kid’s trampoline and try to jump as high as you can without bouncing all over the place.  That’s an ab work out.  For fun, throw some flips and twists in.  Actually, you better not do that.  You might get hurt.

Anyway, I’m sitting at this meet as involved and as proud as any parent could be.  Or not.  I totally should have taken pictures of this, because you might not believe me.  My friend points to a man a few rows in front of us.  He has his laptop out and open on his lap.  No, he is not doing work.  He has an Excel spreadsheet and is keeping track of all the scores.  Seriously?  And, to top it off, a few minutes later the couple sitting behind him whips out not one, but TWO camcorders.  They are each recording at the same time.  CRAZY!  I guess one was getting the competition?  I nudge my Mom who is sitting with me and say, “aren’t you glad I didn’t bring 2 camcorders and make you hold one?”  And she says, “Who are you kidding?  You didn’t even bring one!”

That’s right folks.  I admit it.  I went to my child’s sporting event and did not take a camcorder?  Does this make me lazy?  Does this make me a bad mom?  I don’t think so.  I did bring my digital camera and got this cute shot of her outside the Civic Center. lubbock-001

AND, to prove I’m not totally lazy, here is a shot of us in front of Texas Tech University.  I was trying to throw in a little culture and experience on a gymnastics trip so we went to see the school!lubbock-003

What about you?  Do you get totally into your child’s sporting events?  This could make for some funny stories so don’t hold back here! Time to confess.  Use Mr. Linky to link back to your site and grab this button to post.

Okay, so this is not actually a parenting one, as I was not a parent at the time, but this TOTALLY brought me back to when I was helping supervise students at a track meet… this was for grades 5 and 6 if I recall correctly. Like everyone else with the little school I was helping out, I was cheering on a little girl who was at the front of the pack and held herself there.
After a while, an athletic looking little woman turned to eye me sharply and casually asked me which girl I was cheering for. I pointed out the girl who was in second place, and she asked me why I thought she might win. I said something about how she was a natural athlete, just like her dad and the rest of her family, and a great runner.
The woman stares at me for a moment, then coldy informs that that her daughter, in the lead, is going to win, because she trains for hours a day, and she (her mom) is a fitness trainer and her father is a bodybuilder.

I was (for once) at a complete loss of words. lol. I mean, seriously, this was a for-fun track meet between a few smaller schools. What a psycho. poor kid.
(after her daughter won, she congratulated her while handing her a towel, then critiqued her run. i repeat, poor kid.)

LMA- I feel your pain! the only reason I have pictures of this Easter is because my wonderful sister-in-law loves taking pictures and shares! It is her hobby, and I love her more and more for it every Christmas, Easter, birthday tec. It is a Lazy Mom crutch, and I am lucky to have it!!!!

You should check to see if your digital camera has video. It beats carrying a camera and camcorder.

So anyways…last December was my daughters first ballet program. The people in the front row was kind enough to let me sit in front of them (their child was not in her group). My camera has both and I decided to record the event for memory. My husband had his camera so he took the still photos. I was so proud of her (her group was 2 1/2 – 3yrs old) she did everything right and I can go back and take a look at it.

Now my boys (who are teenagers)…I have many pics and video’s of them playing soccer that I no longer take photos at their events. At soccer tournaments there is usually a photographer that takes action shots during a game on Saturday and on Sunday morning the photos are available to buy. They take much better shots then my cheesy camera could get. So I buy those.

Only ONE time I REALLY got into my son’s sporting event. Soccer game getting out of hand. Ref was not calling the bad plays. Kids getting knocked around. Yelling from BOTH sides of the field going on. That parents and players were all going to start fighting. Field Marshall game to the field and said that the girl reffing the game was not allowed to center ref. But already end of game and nothing to be done. We ended up with 3 MAJOR injuries and were down 3 players for the next game. At the time…my son was 12. Now he’s 16 and can hold his own on the field. Oh…but what a day it was:-) hahaha Our coach made us ALL stay on the field so the other team can leave. He didn’t want a brawl out in the parking lot.

My daughter plays select level soccer. I knew she was pretty good but we go out, have a good time and enjoy the game and the competition. We are all pretty competitive but aren’t psycho about it. One of the parents on her team kept stats for every game, would scout the fields prior to our playing time ( the day before) and analyze the stats of the team we were playing. I don’t think even ESPN got as good of an analysis as we did. Learned alot from that parent but it took a lot of the fun out of the game. They had us convinced that if we weren’t on the BEST team in the area by the time we were 12 we could kiss any hopes of college play goodbye. Seriously – I don’t even know what I’m doing for dinner tonight, much less if my kid will want to play college soccer :)

I can’t say that in all the years my guys have played sports that I remember seeing a parent keeping stats like that! Kinda intense!!

Of course, because I’m a youth sports photographer, my sons’ sporting events are well-documented. But as anyone who reads my blog knows, I’m as likely to be taking pix of wildflowers and tattoos (today’s post; just click on my name to read it) as I am my guys!!

HaHa- I can’t get a decent shot a gymnastics meet anyway, so I don’t even bother. NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY. A gym meet coordinator tried to kick me out of the meet one time when the flash accidentally fired, when there was NO ONE on the beam at the time and the camera was aimed at the floor and I accidentally hit the flash button on the front. So after heated discussion, I think I called her a “Gym Nazi” I didn’t even dare take a pic of MY daughter (even without the flash) so she wouldn’t get poorly judged!! The kicker… after the meet we were seated at adjacent tables at Friday’s and she was whispering about me to her dinner mates!!

The world is not really concerned with a Level 4 gym meet in Missouri!! Get over it!!
