Cleaning Out The Closets!

March 9, 2009 4 Comments... Leave a Comment

One thing I do each spring is tackle my kids closets.  Even though we just moved in to this house in August, I am amazed at how disorganized the closets are.  Here is a before picture of my Ellie Grace’s closet (we will now refer to her as “EG” because it’s much easier to type!)

and here’s another angle:

Look closely and you can see a big brown plastic tub up on her shelf.  That tub is filled with clothes that don’t fit anymore.  Throughout the season, as we discover things EG has outgrown I will put them into that tub.  So, the first thing I do is start with sorting through the tub.  Like any good Lazy Mom, I take the tub to the t.v. room so I can sort through it while watching The Young and Restless.  (I really wish Nick and Sharon would get back together!).  Here I am sorting the clothes:  one pile for consignment, one pile for giveaway, and one pile for fall and winter clothes.  I can only sell spring and summer in consignment right now.

Now, I have no idea what is on the t.v.  Is that man brushing his chin?  Just curious.  But, you can see I have some sort of system working with my piles. Now, I put the fall and winter clothes back into the tub and move the donate pile away.

It’s looking more manageable now, don’t you think?  So, now I start the tagging process.  I am taking my clothes to the Just Between Friends Sale in my area.  You can go to www.jbfsale.com to find a sale in your area.  I price and tag my own items, drop them off and then they sell them for me.  It’s so easy. I have done it for several years and usually make several hundred dollars.  I use the money to replenish my kids’ closets!  They have a very easy tagging system that you do on your computer and then you pin it to your clothing item and put it on a hanger and you are ready to go.

Once I finished that, I had over $200 in items.  This is just from one closet.  I also need to go through our toy closet because I can sell toys there.  I head back to EG’s closet to put it back in working order.  Here are some pics from the final product:

This is not how I would organize my own closet, but it’s best for a 6 year old. I have grouped the clothes by outfit.  The shirt is hanging with the matching bottoms so it’s easy for her to find.  Here are some more pics:

I am the worst at organize closets! I am not kidding when I say ALL of my closets are horribly disorganized right now. The one in the master bedroom is the worst & I avoid the mess at all costs. You litterlly cannot walk in it which is saying a lot since it is a nice and big walk in lol.

I really need to go through all the bedroom closets & get rid of a bunch of stuff. Both of my kids have tons of clothes they have outgrown and I think I might try your idea of selling them. Especailly since my 7 year old grew 3 inches in 1 month & outgrew all of his new school clothes before he could wear them very much!

Any advice or suggestions on how I can get myself motivated to tackle 3 bedroom closets, the coat closet & pantry?

    Stormie,
First of all, don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. Concentrate on one closet at a time. Set a time limit for how much time you are willing to invest that day and work as smartly as you can. When time is up, stop. Come back to it in a day or two and finish it up. You’d be amazed at what 10 minutes can accomplish. Try concentrating on even one shelf at a time. Also, if they are the kids closets, get them involved. You’d be surprised and what they think is fun. Plus, they are spending time with Mom and they all like that.

As far as your pantry, I called Lazy Mom Leslie over to help me. Enlist the help of one of your girlfriends. You could make it more fun by pouring a couple of glasses of wine.

Most importantly, take before and after pictures and then e-mail them to your favorite Lazy Moms. We can’t wait to see!
