Birthday Traditions

We all have birthday traditions. Blowing out the candles, opening gifts, or a special dinner. We do all those things but we also have another birthday tradition that my kids look forward to.

Each year, the night before their birthday while they are asleep, I decorate their door. The birthday child wakes up to streamers, ballons and a banner. They LOVE it! In fact, they always sleep in the same room the night before a birthday. That way they both get to enjoy the streamers and balloons in the morning.

I started this about seven years ago. The amount of decorations have varied over the years. Both of their bedroom doors are right next to the stair railing, so in the past I have wrapped the streamers around the spindles and attached balloons to the newel posts on the stairs. But without fail each year there is a curtain of streamers to walk through and balloons to kick out of the way.P1020473

It is a very inexpensive and easy thing to do and it makes them so happy and feel so special! This is a tradition I think will stand the test of time in our home. I am even thankful that they have summer birthdays. That means it’s possible they’ll be home from college for their birthday and I can still decorate their door!

What special birthday traditions do you have in your family? We’d love to hear all about it!
