A Place for Everything

A place for everything and everything in its place. Wouldn’t we all love to actually live like that? In theory, that’s great! However, in real life things seldom work that way. How many times have we told our children (or ourselves) that if they had put their gameboy away where it goes they wouldn’t be crying because they couldn’t find it.

I have discovered that if I can organize small areas of my home it makes me feel more relaxed and more in control. Sometimes, these small organized areas will grow and spread, just as disorganized areas tend to do. This is a picture of the inside of our linen closet in the master bathroom:

 011-1

It is actually not a closet, but a cabinet. The bottom half is a built in laundry hamper. Whenever I open this cabinet to get a towel or some medicine I am greeted with a small picture of organization. It doesn’t seem like much, but when I am rushing to get in the shower, it’s nice to know immediately where the extra soap can be found. Or if I have a horrible headache it’s a little gift to myself to be able to find my Advil and know that it’s not expired.

The very top shelf, which you can’t see, has extra toilet paper and boxes of Kleenex. The top shelf that you can see holds our bath towels, hand towels and wash cloths. It really helps that the towels are all folded the same and lined up nicely in the cabinet. Doesn’t that look much nicer than towels that are shoved in there and spilling off the shelf?

012

The next shelf has three baskets which contain different items. You can see that they are all labeled with their contents. This makes it easy for anyone in the family to find what they need and it also makes it easy to put everything away.

008

The bottom shelf holds two sets of small plastic drawers with room to spare. You can see that the drawers are all labeled as well. I love my label maker! I have put the one I own in our Lazy Moms Store, along with some other organizational items. It’s inexpensive and gives me sanity!

By dividing up the different types of medications that we use I am able to easily see what I have and what I am running out of. I very seldom run out of my Tylenol Cold and Sinus because I know that what I see is what I get. There isn’t any hidden in other parts of the house. Imagine feeling horrible and searching your home for medication that you know must be there. You would look in every drawer and cabinet in each bathroom, in the kitchen, in the nightstands, in your purse….it would make you feel even worse.

This is my own small case of OCD out in the light of day for all of you to see. But when I open this cabinet, it makes me feel good. I feel in control, I feel organized and I feel calm. Now if I could only do the same thing in my closet!

I’m obsessed with having my linen closet look like that. I once went on a vacation and my mother in law was kind enough to do the laundry. When I came home the towels were not folded the way I like them, co I had to re-fold before I could go to bed. This is the only area of my home that looks perfect. I’m sounding a little crazy/OCD now.

okay all you crazy mommas! If it bothers you all that much to have a messy closet/cabinet then please come over and organize mine!
LOL – I really wish I had that gene in my body.

I have to say that my bathroom cabinet is the only place in my hous that is organized. Probably because my kids can’t reach it. I have no tips to add, but I swear by plastic bins, tubs and the little stacked drawers.

Great-looking cabinet! Wish it were mine!! I did put a small, metal, three-shelf, open bookcase in the bathroom, and that has stayed organized with extra towels, shampoos, bandages, and my blow dryer. As for the under-the-vanity cabinets? That’s a future get ’er done, fer sure!

I am feeling very at home with my fellow OCD sisters. There is no place in my house safe from my label maker. At the moment every drawer, cabinet and closet is in order in my house. This is what happens when there is no wine in the house.

Okay, I was JUST thinking the other day about how incredibly disorganized my house is right now, and how it is driving me crazy! I’m usually the one with OCD and making sure everything has its place. You gals are inspiring me to get back into shape organizationally! Thanks! Do you by any chance hire out? Smile.
