And The Winners Are!

The winning Cooking Tip for the week is…

I make a menu of meals before I even think of heading to the grocery store. I also keep a magnetic notepad on the refrigerator and as we run out or low on something, it is to be written on the list. My shopping is much easier this way!

The tip was submitted by Kristi. Contact us with your mailing information Kristi and we will get your autographed copy of Sandra Lee’s Semi Homemade Money Saving Meals in the mail. It’s a great book …

Virgin Baked Beans

Today I am cooking my first ever batch of baked beans.  I know most of you find this simply amazing, but let me tell you why:

1.  I hate beans

2.  Because I hate beans I don’t want to touch them, look at them, or smell them.

Alas, I am growing up.  I will be 35 years old this summer and decided it was time to conquer my fears.  That, and the fact that I am having my Aunt and cousins over for dinner tonight.  We are having burgers …

Real Time Cooking

This morning I am cooking a recipe submitted by Melissa H.  In fact, it even made it into our poll.  Here is her recipe:

Crock pot – pot roast (tastes like prime rib) 1 roast (rump, shoulder, etc… I find that it doesn’t matter) 1 package of dry italian dressing 1 cup of au jous 5 beef bullion cubes 2 + cups of water (fill crock pot 1/2 way up with water) Cook in crock pot on low heat for at least 8 hrs. This is great to start …

Measuring Ingredients Accurately Is An Important Aspect In Saving Money

Pumpkin Pie Spice is one of my pantry items, because it brings so much flavor to a dish. But when measuring it you want to be careful. One teaspoon of an average brand will cost you 71 cents. so if you make that a heaping teaspoon you are at a dollar.

Our Tips of the Day this week are provided by Sandra Lee Semi Homemade! They are all money saving tips from her new show, Sandra’s Money Saving Meals. Her books and magazine are available in our Amazon store. Thanks Sandra!

Memorial Day Munchies

Last weekend was Memorial Day. If you keep up with us on Twitter or Facebook you know that we both spent a bunch of time in a pool over the weekend. Over the course of the three day weekend my family went to three different pool parties. That eaquals lots of laundry, lots of sunscreen, a little sunburn, lots of fun and lots and lots of food!

The first party we went to was with one other family at their home. I brought all the food. I decided to make BMagees …

Save Money By Doing The Prep Work Yourself

One medium onion that you chop yourself will cost you 28 cents, the same amount of frozen pre chopped onion will cost you double that 56 cents. And if you went to my former favorite place the salad bar, it would cost you $4.99lb.  I now chop my own garlic, I do a bulb at a time… chop it then put a tsp. of oil in the container to prevent it from drying out. By doing it myself, I pay 75 cents for the bulb, the same about pre-chopped would …

If It’s Out Of Season, Shop For It In The Frozen Section

The frozen section of the grocery store is a place where you can get an item that is out of season at a reasonable price. In season four ears of corn will run you $1.00, out of season one ear will cost you $1.00. In the frozen section you can get a bag of corn that is frozen at the peak of freshness for $1.99 which is roughly equal to four ears.
